What is counselling?

Counselling is employed to facilitate the development of individuals, couples and groups toward a greater awareness and ability to manage life's problems and challenges, and to make more effective life choices.  But it is also a chance to talk in private with someone who will really listen and try to understand you and who will not judge you or tell you what to do. It can be a great relief to speak to someone who will not be hurt or upset by what you say.

How does counselling help?

There are several theories about how counselling works.  However, all counselling has the same basic elements:

What kind of counselling is best for you?

There are many different types of counselling to choose from, but there is no "best", so it is worth looking around to find one that suits you.
Remember that the type of counselling you choose could be less important than the relationship you have with your counsellor.

Code of Ethics

The code is set primarily to protect the clients, and it may also serve to protect the counsellor against possible manipulation or exploitation by a disturbed client. Please refer to the "Client Contract Form" and "Ethics"for counselling and psychotherapy"
(bacp), or ask the counsellor for a copy.
